11/9/2014  Phantom is ready for his forever home:

Phantom is finished with all surgeries and vet appointments and is ready to find his FOREVER home.

Phantom is the PERFECT dog! He is fully housebroken, hardly ever barks at all (unless his foster siblings start barking) and loves every animal and person he encounters.

He rides very well in the car and just looks out the window the entire time. He loves to go for walks. Shorter walks are best for him now until he gets his stamina up.

Above everything else his absolute favorite things to do are to eat and to be with people. He loves taking naps on someone and when it's dinner time he jumps like a little jumping bean.

He listens very well and if he ever does anything naughty (like trying to eat his foster brothers dinner) a stern "No" is all it takes and he stops dead in his tracks.

Phantom is the most perfect, easy dog you could ever ask for and would make the best companion. He could be an only dog or have a doggie brother and sister and be happy either way.

"Happy Update" on Phantom 10/14/2014:

Phantom’s face is fully healed and he is growing hair back all over his face with the exception of the bridge of his nose. His skin is dark where the burn was which I think makes him look so cute and unique.

Phantom had his eye surgery on October 2nd. He went in for cataract removal surgery on his left eye and eyelid correction on his right eye (the burned eye). They were able to remove the cataract but they were not able to fit a lens on him. The doctor said it was due to the size of his eye. What that means for him is that he will be far sighted only but not near sighted. The doctor said it could take weeks before we are able to see the full results. We are already noticing a difference. He was always extremely careful of where he would walk, feeling the ground underneath him with each step. Walking him with a harness and leash was quite the long drawn out adventure J. Not anymore he is zooming all over the place, we let him out in the back yard and he ran across it for the first time about a week ago! My husband and I were amazed! He is also now able to walk up the steps which is a big accomplishment for him as well. Yesterday he went down the stairs for the first time very cautiously…he was nervous but I encouraged him with every step. We are so happy for him with every small accomplishment he makes. He still can’t see like other dogs can see but he has come leaps and bounds from the days he would bump into every wall.

As for the eyelid surgery – the doctor cut away scar tissue from his top and bottom eyelid and then what looked like one stitch in order to make the eye hole smaller. He is able to kind of blink that eye but when he sleeps it doesn’t close. After the surgery the doctor said “We will see if the eyelid surgery takes”.  We have our follow up appointment with the eye doctor on Sunday at 2:00pm.

Since the first day Phantom came into our home…despite all that pain he was in he was still the happiest, sweetest dog you would ever meet in your life. If you just said his name he would wag his tail. He gets happier and sweeter every day. I swear dogs that have been through a tough time know when they are in a good place and appreciate things on a different level. Every single treat and every ounce of affection and attention that Phantom gets is greeted with kisses, tail wags and shrieks of excitement. When I have to go into the office I take him with me. Tons of people stop by to see him and he greets everyone with a wagging tail and a hopeful look that they will reach down and pet him. He just sleeps on his bed while I work. He has never barked once.

Phantom is completely housebroken. He has never had an accident in my house or office. He gets along with every person and animal he has ever met. He LOVES people and he just LOVES life!!!

Phantom is available for adoption and sponsorship. He was badly burned on his face but no one took him for medical treatment. Animal Control took possession of him and called rescue. Now he is healing and we are making sure he gets all the medical care he needs.

Update on Phantom 10/1/14:
Phantom's update:  Phantom has surgery scheduled for his eyes.  His eyelid will be able to close on the side that was burned.  He should be able to see after this surgery.  As you can see his face, the skin is healing and darkening.  Wouldn't it be great if his hair could grow back?  He still needs to be neutered but one thing at a time. He is a delightful little guy who loves people.  Stay tuned and we will let you know how his surgery goes. Thank you for checking and thank you for the donations.  It made his expensive surgery possible.

Update on Phantom 9/1/2014:

Phantom’s progress:   We saw Dr. Miller who was the same vet Phantom saw on the very first day he was surrendered. Dr. Miller was extremely impressed by Phantom’s overall progress - he said his skin is healing beautifully and he was very pleased with how happy he is.

Dr. Miller was able to get a better look at Phantom’s teeth now that his face is healed up and he said he between 8 and 10 years old.

Phantom has a yeast infection in both ears – so he was prescribed medicine that we squirt in each of his ears daily. After we treated his ears on Sunday we tested him out without the cone for a while to see if he would leave his face alone and he is doing wonderful. He doesn’t rub his face anymore which is awesome!

We went to the ophthalmologist at Saint Francis Veterinary Center, in Woolrich Twsp, NJ, on Thursday morning to out what they can do for his cataracts in his good eye and what we should do about his burnt eye.  His face is almost fully healed with the exception of a little spot on his nose. They gave estimates on surgery for his eyes - between $2300 and $4500. That does not include his dental cleaning and neutering.  But we want to let him heal completely before we do anything to cause him more pain.

He is doing wonderful – has been going on short walks in the evening when the sun is about to go down but he doesn’t get very far because he can’t see well. You can tell he is starting to memorize where everything is in our house and our back yard. He is being a lot less careful about his footsteps while in the house and he is even jumping on the couch now that he is able to go without the cone!

Update on Phantom 8/25/2014:
He is doing extremely well! He went to Del Val vet last Tuesday and they said that he is definitely improving. The vet advised that we start to space out his pain medicine as long as he isn't too uncomfortable so on Friday we extended the medicine from every 6 hours to every 7 hours and then yesterday we started every 8 hours. We could probably stretch it out even more but I want to wait until the rest of the scab on his face falls off.

We asked about his vision (particularly in his burned eye) and she said that he can see out of the burned eye. We go back to the vet this Friday and we will get the results of the test at that time.  The vet also said that it’s likely that some of the hair on his face will grow back…I have already started to notice his whiskers growing.

He is in really good spirits. I know a lot of people questioned what his quality of life would be like but I am telling you he is a SUPER HAPPY dog! He LOVES hearing people around him, getting back rubs, eating treats and eating breakfast and dinner. He is a little piggy. He could be in the middle of a deep sleep but if he hears a treat bag open he comes running J.  Phantom has a very special bond with my husband Tim. As soon as Tim gets home from work he squeals with excitement and Tim spends a good 10 minutes on the ground with him rubbing his back and playing with him while Phantom just kisses Tim’s face off. It is just the cutest thing to watch.

I've attached some photos of Phantom. He is covered in burn cream but hopefully you all can see how much better his skin is looking. As I said before he rubs the burn cream all over the inside of the cone so his hair is a greasy mess. I can’t wait for the day that I can give him a real bath from head to toe. I’m sure he can’t either.

Thank you all for your words of support and encouragement for this little one. Your prayers and thoughts are what is really getting him through this very critical time.

Thank you so much to everyone who has made a donation and is Sponsoring Phantom, you are helping us to make him whole again.  He needs your support desperately to help him overcome this devastating injury!!!  Please check out Phantom's new photo's at the bottom of this page and see how much healing has taken place.

Phantom was picked up by Animal Control in Philadelphia because he was badly burned on his face and he is in sooooooo much pain from it.  They called SAY and asked if we could help him.  He was rushed to our vet and treated for his burns.  He is on pain meds, anti inflamatories, soothing ointments and lydocaine cream.  The eye on the side of his face with the burn is dead and he may lose that eye.  All he does is cry.   We just can't  understand how this could have happened to him because he is the sweetest, most loving and friendly little boy you will ever meet.  He was flea ridden, dirty, matted and had dew claws growing into his skin. THIS OR ANYTHING LIKE IT, WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO PHANTOM AGAIN!!!  SAY will get him all the medical attention he needs and try to make him whole again.  His foster mom Carol and foster dad Tim will nurse him back to health and make him look like a normal dog .  His vet bills are going to be astronomical because of the extent of damage of the burn.  If there is any way you are able to help us pay the vet bills by Sponsoring Phantom, if you have it in your heart to help this innocent little dog, then please, put in a donation in Phantom's name.

YOUR generosity is appreciated!

KEEP THESE FACTS IN MIND:
1. Yorkies do not usually get along well with small children and can be injured by small children, even ones who love them. Be aware of this and keep them apart. 2. Yorkies can be very difficult (nearly impossible) to housebreak. If you are gone for more than 3 hours at a time, the dog will have to have access to wee wee pads, or need someone to stop in to let him out to potty.
3. We almost NEVER get a puppy (less than one year old) in Yorkie Rescue. If only a puppy will do, check the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website for a recommended breeder - never buy over the Internet, or from a newspaper ad or a petstore. The heartache you save will be immeasureable.
4. There is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie, so don't be misled by such a description. LEARN about the breed BEFORE you decide to adopt.
5. You will need to make arrangements to drive and meet the dog at the foster home which can be in New Jersey, western PA, Maryland,  etc. The dog's biography lists where the dog is fostering. We want you to meet the dog with your family and your dog, if you have one. This is a requirement for adoption.

WHAT IS THE ADOPTION FEE?
Adoption donations generally vary from dog to dog, it depends on the health, the age and the size of the dog.

Young Yorkies will have a higher adoption donation since they are the most highly sought after and they help to cover the costs of the older dogs who have a harder time finding a loving home. It is sad but true that people overwhelming demand very young dogs when they would be infinitely happier with a mellow adult.

 ADOPTION AREA

Save A Yorkie Rescue prefers to adopt only in the PA, NJ, western NY, DE, MD, VA, some CT area's. If you are in the NYC area or near Long Island, there is a Yorkie Rescue closer to you.

Be aware that you will be asked to drive to meet and pick up your dog.
