Foster Information

----for people who REALLY care about Yorkies

 What is Foster Care?

A foster home is a temporary safe haven for a rescued dog.
It is the most crucial yet scarce ingredient in animal rescue!

Offer a temporary home! A "Foster" home. We are ALWAYS looking for  good homes to foster our Yorkies.
Often
the term "Foster Care" has a different
meaning to different people. Please read the information below
to help you understand what will be expected of you.
Please give it a try.
You'll be glad you did.

What do I do as a Foster Parent?

The responsibility of the foster home is to provide a safe, secure, stable environment
and, most importantly, the love. Some dogs may require special care, such as post
medical attention, gaining weight or strength, socializing, building trust, exercise,
and discipline. Through fostering, these animals come to understand that the safest place
in the world is in the arms of their caretakers.
As little as a week spent in your home will often give the dog the confidence it needs
to find its permanent home. We will try to accommodate your preferences as far as age
and sex of your foster dog the best we can and the length of commitment is up to you.

What issues will the dog have?

Many Yorkies come into rescue with issues. Very few dogs land in rescue without a few minor
quirks or problems. This means that all the sweet little dogs generally go from their original
home to the adoptive home without spending much time in foster care in between. The Yorkies
in foster care may have a special problem that requires some work on the part of the foster
care giver. Sometimes this problem is large enough to require that the dog stay for a long time
period, perhaps even months.

Typical Reasons a Yorkie needs fostering:

  • Yorkies need a place to stay while transport is arranged — very common. We often need helpin transporting Yorkies to vets, to foster homes and forever homes.
  • The Yorkie may have a medical condition which makes it hard to place — skin condition,
broken bones, seizures, diabetes or it needs to be spayed or neutered
  • The Yorkie may have housebreaking problems and needs to be retrained.
(We will supply belly bands and advice.)
  • The Yorkie marks and needs to be retrained ( Neutering will help and we will supply belly bands until training controls the problem)
  • The Yorkie may have shown signs of aggression which may be due to it's current environment - small children, for example
(Note: If a dog proves to be truly aggressive, we will not continue to foster it; it will be put down)
  • The Yorkie has been through a trauma or comes from a puppymill; may need isolation in your home.

What if I fall in love with my foster dog, am I permitted to adopt it?
We do not refuse to allow a foster home to adopt a foster dog. We understand that sometimes you may become too attached to give the dog up.
Since we have already screened you for foster care, your home already meets our standards for adoption.
BUT we do attach a string. Foster homes are very hard to come by. We don't want to lose a foster home because you have so many dogs that you can't care for a foster dog any longer.
So, we will ask that you commit to continue fostering even after adopting the dog.
What costs are associated with fostering a SAYRescue Yorkie?
The cost to you is only your time, love, food and compassion. SAYRescue will cover the necessary medical treatment, grooming, and supplies for your foster dog.

By taking just ONE needy rescue dog into your home,
you are making the difference between life and death!
Your commitment creates a space for us to take another dog
out of the shelter and save another life.

If you think you might be able to offer a foster home,
Please take a moment and fill out an adoption
application

Foster Dog Moments    music by Emerson Drive    lyrics by Marilyn Faughner

He was coming to the end of a very short walk

Finally out of that stinkin’ cage in the back

 At the Manhattan Pound

Followed her down the hall

He panted as he caught his breath

Stopping at the door that smelled of death

He looked up to say

“But I’ve been a good dog today.”

She smiled lookin’ just a bit ashamed,

And sighed, “I know, it shouldn’t have to end this way.”

You’ve had your moments, days in the sun

Moments, you were second to none

Moments, when you obeyed just like good dogs do.

Like that day, they first carried you home

As a puppy, you played with a bone

And made memories like a bed so warm

Even now they see you through

Lookin’ at Skittles now no one might know it

But he’s had his moments

Skittles stood there tryin’ to keep his nerve

Wonderin’ if a single soul on Earth

Would care at all

Miss him when he’s gone.

His tail just kept wagging around

Hopin’ they wouldn’t just put him down

Skittles hoped they recognized

That look in his eyes

Standing there he didn’t feel so brave

She said, “I know, it shouldn’t have to end this way.”

You’ve had your moments, days in the sun

Moments you were second to none

Moments when you never dreamed you’d end up in rescue

Like each day he walked up and down the line

For the woman, the love of his life

His devotion, shown day and night

He did what good dogs do.

Lookin’ at Skittles now no one might know it

But he’s had his moments.

She knows a kind foster lady will take him home tonight.

And a new family will hold and love him,

ONE MORE TIME,

She sighs,

You’ll have more moments, days in the sun

Moments when you are second to none

Moments when you will never have to be scared again.

Like that desperate hour, at the door of death

When you were only a stray, close to ending it

Rescue was right there, wasn’t late a bit

CAUSE WE FOUND A FOSTER HOME!

Lookin’ at Skittles now no one might know it

Oh, lookin’ at Skittles now no one might know it

But he’ll have more moments…

He’ll have more moments…

He’ll have more moments…
