Six people stood mesmermized around the small enclosure.

Peering around the crowd, the old lady couldn't believe her eyes. It was the tiniest Yorkie puppy she had ever seen - bouncing from toy to toy amid the cooing of the crowd. The woman smiled and pushed closer... oh, such a dear little thing. She just couldn't leave her here, in this pet store, in a cage. Why it was inhuman to think this happy moppet lived in a cage. Without another thought, she marched over to the cashier and wrote a check for $2000.

The puppy was hers! Wouldn't Frank be surprised? She hadn't really thought that far ahead but - oh, doesn't everybody love puppies? Frank would fall in love just as quickly as she. Following the clerk, she gathered bowls and brushes, leashes and bows, trimmers, food, treats, toys and - oh look at the darling little velvet dress with a pink bow - she had to have one for... what was the pup's name? She hadn't even asked if it was a boy or girl. What should she call - It? The clerk pulled the kennel card from the cage front - and there it was, her name was Lily!

Fast forward 6 months... Frank was dead, a sudden heart attack, and there was no money. Her children urged her to move to a small apartment, closer to them and she really felt she should. But after weeks of calling, inquiring time after time - it was clear. No one would rent to her if she insisted on bringing her dog. She just couldn't believe she would have to give her precious Lily away...

And thus Lily came to us. Yes she is just as active as a puppy can be. No she wasn't given any discipline or training - she was loved but as we often advise, love is not enough, not nearly enough. Dogs need much more. Its like having a baby without having 9 months to plan for it's care. People sometimes buy a dog on a whim and find out that they aren't suited to having such an active needy animal. As did our Lily. She is doing well and learning quickly - she deserves someone with time, experience and lots of energy. Lily would love to have another dog to pal with.

She is fostering in kingston, NY   please consider what she needs and if that matches your family, please apply!

KEEP THESE FACTS IN MIND:
1. Yorkies do not usually get along well with small children and can be injured by small children, even ones who love them. Be aware of this and keep them apart. 2. Yorkies can be very difficult (nearly impossible) to housebreak. If you are gone for more than 3 hours at a time, the dog will have to have access to wee wee pads, or need someone to stop in to let him out to potty.
3. We almost NEVER get a puppy (less than one year old) in Yorkie Rescue. If only a puppy will do, check the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website for a recommended breeder - never buy over the Internet, or from a newspaper ad or a petstore. The heartache you save will be immeasureable.
4. There is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie, so don't be misled by such a description. LEARN about the breed BEFORE you decide to adopt.
5. You will need to make arrangements to drive and meet the dog at the foster home which can be in New Jersey, western PA, Maryland,  etc. The dog's biography lists where the dog is fostering. We want you to meet the dog with your family and your dog, if you have one. This is a requirement for adoption.

WHAT IS THE ADOPTION FEE?
Adoption donations generally vary from dog to dog, it depends on the health, the age and the size of the dog.

Young Yorkies will have a higher adoption donation since they are the most highly sought after and they help to cover the costs of the older dogs who have a harder time finding a loving home. It is sad but true that people overwhelming demand very young dogs when they would be infinitely happier with a mellow adult.

 ADOPTION AREA

Save A Yorkie Rescue prefers to adopt only in the PA, NJ, western NY, DE, MD, VA, some CT area's. If you are in the NYC area or near Long Island, there is a Yorkie Rescue closer to you.

Be aware that you will be asked to drive to meet and pick up your dog.
