The small dog lifted one brow and opened an eye... his ears went up like flags and his tail twitched in anticipation. "Was that HER?" He had been dreaming but thought he heard the sweet sound of a familiar voice just outside of the cage where he was lying on wet cement?  He stood, poised, head tilted in joyous eagerness. "Oh, please, please let it be HER... " he hoped as hard as a dog knew how to pray.

He had waited days for this moment. It had been a nightmare of strange places, strange people, hunger, storms, rain, thunder, terror. He missed home and HER - his Person. She would come. He knew she would pick him up and he would put his nose in that soft quiet spot under her chin. They would 'go for a ride', home to his food, his toys, his place in bed beside HER.  This ordeal would fade from memory and he would be happy again.

Oh PLEASE, let that be HER!

But, no, it was another nice lady.. a very nice lady checking his kennel tag but he didn't care. Nothing mattered if it wasn't HER. He closed his eyes and fell back into the familiar dream of carrying his Bunny - the brown furry toy he kept safely tucked under HER bed. His legs moved while he slept. It was much easier to endure the cage when he slept, and hoped.

Suddenly he heard the sound of the latch on his cage and the echoes of many voices. He stood, shook himself and peered out to see who was talking to him. "You are such a pretty boy," he heard the stranger whisper. "Come on... you can come home with us. We have other Yorkies just your size, a fenced yard and lots of toys. You'll have a good time." They looped a blue nylon rope around his neck and waited for him to decide to walk out with them. There was nothing to be done but saunter out of that terrible cage with the smiling people.  Every dog in every cage, up and down the aisle, watched with envy as the little Yorkie boy followed the people.

When they approached the large double doors of the shelter, the large man stooped low and giving the dog a gentle scratch behind his ears, lifted him easily into his arms. It was scary being up so high, not knowing who these people were or where they were taking him but the security of his strong arms reassured the trembling Yorkie. "Hi, sweetie, don't worry. My name is Andy - and you,' he said with a tender squeeze, 'are Little Andy."

The dog swallowed once and with a trusting blink, tucked his head into the quiet spot in Andy's neck. Little Andy knew that these folks already cared about him and would keep him safe.

And thus Little Andy came into rescue. He is vacationing in Lancaster, PA with Andy. This little boy is very athletic, can jump fairly high, likes to get out and walk - nees someone who wants to give him the exercise that he needs.

KEEP THESE FACTS IN MIND:
1. Yorkies do not usually get along well with small children and can be injured by small children, even ones who love them. Be aware of this and keep them apart. 2. Yorkies can be very difficult (nearly impossible) to housebreak. If you are gone for more than 3 hours at a time, the dog will have to have access to wee wee pads, or need someone to stop in to let him out to potty.
3. We almost NEVER get a puppy (less than one year old) in Yorkie Rescue. If only a puppy will do, check the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website for a recommended breeder - never buy over the Internet, or from a newspaper ad or a petstore. The heartache you save will be immeasureable.
4. There is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie, so don't be misled by such a description. LEARN about the breed BEFORE you decide to adopt.
5. You will need to make arrangements to drive and meet the dog at the foster home which can be in New Jersey, western PA, Maryland,  etc. The dog's biography lists where the dog is fostering. We want you to meet the dog with your family and your dog, if you have one. This is a requirement for adoption.

WHAT IS THE ADOPTION FEE?
Adoption donations generally vary from dog to dog, it depends on the health, the age and the size of the dog.

Young Yorkies will have a higher adoption donation since they are the most highly sought after and they help to cover the costs of the older dogs who have a harder time finding a loving home. It is sad but true that people overwhelming demand very young dogs when they would be infinitely happier with a mellow adult.
